365 Photography Project Thirty-Fourth Post

What I put this child through...heeee :D

Sunday May 29, 2011 Me & she @ the hair salon.

Monday May 30, 2011 May books & DVDs_I loved all of these, EXCEPT the bottom most book, Tasting the Universe, which, frankly, I hated. I disliked the author's science, especially, but I also disliked her writing and her premise. I actually threw it into the recycle bin. On-the-other-hand, I loved A Stroke of Insight and would recommend it highly if you have an interest in how our brains work. Also, if you have any interest in Vietnam, The Things They Carry is excellent and was actually my rec for my bookclub this month. The DVD that's difficult to read is Painters Painting, which I have been waiting to come out on DVD for a couple of years.
If you want to know about any of the others, just ask :D

Tuesday May 31, 2011 Vases
For Lauren: the cloisonne vase on the right belonged to your great-grandmother, Helene, Grandpa Rode's mom. She bought it in San Francisco, in Chinatown  probably in the 1920s or 30s, I don't really know and it does having very cool Chinese letters on the bottom. Grandpa told me that the bottom was intentionally damage to avoid paying customs fees, that doing this was common. IDEK
The vase on the left I bought, I think in the 1990s, as a companion piece and because, as you know, I love dragons.

Wednesday June 01, 2011 AP Physics' boat races, which Lauren's team, she's 2nd from the left with Jimmy & a little further over, Taylor, on 'shore', didn't win but they completed their two laps so...YAY!!! Demetri & Aaron maned the boat. Lauren was 1 of 2 remaining girls in this class, the others having dropped out long ago along with a good number of boys. The class began with 40 kids and end with 19.

Thursday June 02, 2011 Park with distant clouds

Friday June 03, 2011 The renovation continues with the new store, Orchard Supple Hardware, having windows!! which should give a far more open feeling to the structure.

Saturday June 04, 2011 OMG Rain!!! This does not happen in June, does not. Our rain usually stops in April and begins again in November with maybe one rain during the summer which, just sayin, this is not.

'I like the vases.'

I'm so glad you do!!

'I had a few harsh words about the rain this month. I joke that I am solar powered and I am VERY ready for spring/summer weather.'

Well, sweetie, now you've got it, summer's here!!

The Things They Carried
This was summer reading for Samantha, I think between 8th grade and her Freshman year in high school. I don't always read all her assigned books, but this one I did. So powerful and so very discussable. I know she didn't get all the nuances, but I hope she has remembered enough.

Love your park, love the vases, love the wet sidewalks and the happy vegetation. Isn't it amazing how the addition of windows to a big box changes its orientation? FanSee

Re: The Things They Carried
Honestly, I think between 8th & 9th grade is a little young, still, I'm glad you read it too, every woman in my bookclub enjoyed it very much so, I did good.

Glad you liked the others, my special favorite is the wet sidewalk especially now that it's already getting hot. I just took my Friday photo, the next phase of the big box with windows, but you'll just have to wait until next week to see what new and amazing things these crazy construction guys are doing to it :D

I love the story of the vase -- such a special piece!

The salon pic is fun and I love the wild yellow flowers/weeds.

I have a lot from my dad's side and each one has a little story, I'm glad to be able to use this project to share those.

I had manage a couple of photos of Lauren at the salon but his was the only one where she wasn't scowling at me to badly :D
