Number 70 on my mission101_Happiness Month

Once, while cruising around the internet, I found something called The Happiness Month and thought, 'Oh hey, would that be fun to put on my list to do next time around".
Well, six months later and I've decide that 'next time around' has arrived and while I am predictably less enthusiastic about it now than I was then, I will do it anyway because It's On The List.

Doing a Happiness Month apparently requires posting 21 days consecutively (I tremble at the thought, but could happen) and
the posts are to be about:
3 gratitudes (which I have taken to mean...about the past) I've written all these already and will try to group them in some meaningful way.
1 positive (which I have taken to mean...current as on the day of posting)
1 act of kindness (which I'm only sometimes going to post about, otherwise, you'll just have to believe in me) and
some stuff other about, oh you know, exercising and meditation.

Day One
Three Gratitudes_3/ 63
I'm grateful:
1_that I have lived all my life at various points along the coast of California, from south to north, the ocean never more than 45 minutes away.
2_that for a time, with my parents, I lived on a hill overlooking a pristine coyote-filled canyon with the Pacific Ocean in the distance and with the most lovely backyard, planted and maintained by my father, to play in.
3_that for a time, with my parents, I lived on the side of a hill overlooking the greater L.A. Basin toward Topanga Canyon with a view that at night could honestly take your breath away.

One Positive_1/ 21
I finally started pulling together Lauren’s picture book, yet another project I started long ago, and what I had already completed seven years ago has turned out to be far more relevant and useful than I would have imagined. With only a few hours work, I am further along than I would have expected, having already outlined the narrative and set-up the page layouts. Go me!!

I did do one act of kindness, something involving the husband and his culinary wants and needs, which differed considerably form mine, but still, without much bitching and moaning, I gave him the meal he wanted, which wasn't at all what I had planned and started preparing. (the highlighted part is the act of kindness, not the feeding of him)
I did exercise (assuming that dancing vigorously around my kitchen for 15 minutes, working up a sweat, I assure you, counts)
I did meditate (for 10 minutes which, considering I haven't meditated in over a year surprised me as it only felt like 5 minutes)

Twenty days to go.

Nighty night

Good luck with this new mission. It's a great idea. :)

I'm enjoying it so far! Now, on to my second day!!

And if nothing else, I have at least made myself a new 'happy' icon I'm sure I will enjoy long after this task is over :)

This looks fun, but I still have the letter meme to do (and "H" is turning out to be a good letter for me). :)

I'm glad 'H' is working out for you, I look forward to reading what you have to say.

Maybe later, you can give this a try. I tried finding the site that gave the directions as to what to do, but can't. Maybe adapt this to you regular posting, incorporate it as it were. That could be fun!

True, I think I'll do that. :)

:))

it's good to, periodically, mix things up even if only for awhile.

Definitely, I'd get bored otherwise. :)

I just found this article about it when I googled: http://www.examiner.com/article/how-to-reset-your-brain-to-focus-on-positivity

Sounds like a really good thing!

Alex, how awesome!! I found nothing when I googled it and was beginning to think I'd made the whole thing up except, I'm not really that clever. I'll include the link today when I do my post. Thank you!!

Welcome! I just used "three gratitudes one positive one act of kindness twenty-one days" as the search term and it popped right up.

see, what I mean about clever? I only tried Happiness Month, much to narrow a search :)

From doing my own post-a-day challenge, I can say I'm finding it hard work to keep up the momentum! But it's also a positive experience to know I actually can make time for LJ on a daily basis if I really try. Good luck on your challenge!

Your challenge seems more difficult than this one and you have a baby and a little boy to take care of, while my daughter has temporarily relocated to UC Santa Cruz so, requires very little work. I also made it easier on myself by doing the what-will-ultimately-be 63 'gratitudes' during one evening in front of the TV.

Thank you!! and good luck to you too.

Those are wonderful gratitudes.

when you're young, you don't truly appreciate what you've been given. I look back now, and realize that those two houses, which comprise all of my childhood and teen years, were freaking awesome and that I was very privileged.

I am happy to see that the Happiness Month is only 21 days long, unlike my months which, at best, are 28 days long. I love that it's kind of free form, but I do have a few questions.

Meditating: You had meditated before, you said. O.K. I haven't. How did you get started? Should I read up on it? (It just seems wrong to study meditating; I don't know why.) Do you need a mantra? Or can you just sit still and try to clear your mind?

You wrote 63 gratitudes before you even started? I can see why you did that, but I think I'll just start out with the big ones, then let mine peter out at the end. Maybe.

Being kind and exercising for 21 days straight will be a challenge for me. Maybe I should add cutting out some food, like, say, SUGAR to my list. I hope I would feel a difference in my body and even in my mental state if I did. I eat a lot of sugar. (I wouldn't include natural sugars in fruit or minimal amounts used as a spice.)

I shall pense upon it whilies. FanSee

sRe: Happiness Month

Since you, like me, aren't meditating for 'real', we can be creative. Yes, I have read up on it and there are specific ways you are to sit, breath etc. And yes, a mantra. or counting breaths, is helpful, but I never could maintain that regimen, wasn't getting anything from it that I could tell so, I'd give up.

Meditation seemed like one of those things I should do, but didn't actually like doing. I find it very very hard to sit still. Now I use my music, my instrumental music, my mind floats with a particular instrument, which I do talk a little bit about throughout this meme. I try for around 25 minutes a day, I sit fairly right, back straight, shoulders back and down, head centered over my body, eyes closed, in a half-lotus position. Interestingly, this time, I am having insights and ideas that are having a positive affect so, may be worth a try for you.

I wrote the gratitudes, all coming from my past, all at once so I wouldn't repeat myself and as I posted I tried to group related ones together. I think I actually ended on a high note but see what you think if you get there.

Alex (ashmedai) and I discussed this a little, we discussed the meme as a whole quite a bit, and realized that doing acts of kindness meant that you actually needed to be around people to do acts for and neither of us are around people much so, I decided to make my acts of kindness into doing something beyond the normal and a lot of that involved commenting on lj beyond what I normally would. This strategy worked well for me. I didn't exercise for reals, but instead used working in my yard as exercise and my garden benefited a lot.

If you are going to do this, which I hope you do, do whatever feels right for you. Remember, it is all about redirecting your thinking in a more positive direction.

Good point. I'm already pleasant when dealing with my dry cleaner, the clerks at Whole Foods, the nurses at my doctor's office, etc. I think I'll go with doing something beyond my usual. In fact, I think I'll write down a bunch of 'beyond usual' acts I could perform before I start...that'll be a head-scratcher! I can, off-hand, think of a few. FanSee

Re: Happiness Month

very good idea, as long as you can start with even just a few 'beyonds', they will lead to others.
