The Friday Five

1) Has the weather where you are finally started acting like spring is here?
It's 1pm and 69 outside, although it rained a couple of nights ago so, spring-like, I'd say

2) Do you have any special spring activities or outings planned?
No we do not

3) Have you started wearing different clothing appropriate to spring?
No I have not.

4) What signs of spring are manifesting around you?
Where I live, only the amount of rain indicates a change of season, some in winter and spring, very very little in summer and autumn with no snow ever. Now and then, it gets foggy. Once in a while, it's windy. Flowers bloom and birds sing year-round, if only more so during spring, and many trees are evergreen, palms, Monterey junipers, furs so, only a few display flowers or spring green. For some reason, to me, autumn stands out more especially with the trees.

5) Are there special foods you enjoy preparing and/or eating in the spring?
Farmers from the valley bring local produce to our stores and farmer's markets year-round so, the only thing I can really only get in spring are those little tangerines that peel so easily. I could get them year-round but not organic so, limited to spring. Soups get lighter. No more stews. That's about it :)

When I read this, I knew you were close to where we are. We do get cold enough for the trees to lose their leaves, well, most of them, but people still mow their lawns in December. Don't mind this at all! :

I only mind when, like this year, I'm still needing the sprinklers in January. Just not right somehow. And yeah, we mow year-round.

We're finally getting a little rain here, but damn little. It tends to swerve at the last minute. They are predicting nearly a half inch here today, but I somehow doubt it.

Cut grass always says summer to me, which is misleading in January.

It's almost like summer here already, with temps in the mid-20's (Celsius). The weather is crazy, first very cold and rainy, then a 180° turn. Not that I'm complaining about that, though!

Same. Pouring rain one day and short-sleeve weather the next. I know you're not complaining but are your plants. I find that they tend to like a more steady-as-you-go approach :)

I've only sowed or planted out things so far that won't be fazed by a spell of cold (but some don't like much heat either -ergh!). But the long cold season and the sudden heat really is throwing me for a loop with the schedule of starting things indoors or stratifying seeds. I should have started my cauliflower indoors already, but I'm waiting another week, else it'll just bolt.

Instinct tells me we're in for a very late and severe cold snap, and I'm still putting my potatoes out on Monday. I'll just cover them with protective plant fleece, mulch them and hope Mother Nature won't fuck me up. ;)

Long babble, short point: weather be fucked up and I'm not sure what to expect.
